See you all soon.
]]>BVG was born out of a desire for myself, Professor Merv, to connect with my eldest son, Elite Trainer Keon. And a way for us to connect outside of a device. Having been taught the game by Professor Frank before Covid, and after lockdown, we started BVG. Since then, Pokémon has allowed us to attend various Pokémon tournaments across the country and the world, including having the honour and privilege of participating in 2 World Championships.
I had the idea to design a safe, inclusive, and fun space for people who loved Pokémon, and more specifically, the Pokémon TCG, to come together to practice and train and help each other become better players. Brokenvase Games was born from this initial idea, starting off as a purely online business, to borrowing a small space in Kenmore Shopping Village, to finally opening the official shop on December 7, 2020 at 76 Jijaws Street Sumner. We quickly outgrew this location and moved to our current larger location at 1/45 Jijaws Street, where we’ve been for the last 2 years.
With that said, it is with the heaviest of hearts that myself, Kat, Frank, and the rest of the BVG family, have to announce that we will be closing our doors on October 1, 2023. This has been an extremely difficult and heart-wrenching decision to make, and I know that there are many people, ourselves included, that will be saddened by this news. Our online store will remain open however, and any existing preorders that customers have with us will be fulfilled.
I would personally like to thank Kat, my rock and my partner (in every sense of the word), for taking over most of the business aspects when I was unwell and tending to my mental health; Frank, Tom & Llewy for keeping the stores day-to-day operations going while both Kat and I were sick, our stock manager Liesl for making sure all our orders were sent out on time, and of course, our staff Elliot, Ryan, Lawrence, Chris, Nick, Seth & Rob for their tireless efforts and help over the last 3 years, along with our various other staff along the way. An extra shout out to our volunteers whom, without your help, we could not have gotten as far as we did, and to our Judge/Professor Team Members. And of course, all our customers & friends who have supported us constantly over the years. There are so many people to thank for all the love, support and friendship that they have provided us through this journey, so to all of you, both Kat and I extend our great gratitude and thanks to you as well.
You will still see us around the Pokémon circuit, most likely still donning the bright blue BVG shirts, though Keon may go undercover. And its business as usual at the shop until October 1, so come on in for the tournaments or a learn-to-play session. Keon and I will try and be around till then. Grab us for a chat if you do see us.
We will also be selling all our stock. Yes! Including my own special secret stashes. So do come in to snatch a bargain or two.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank every one of you once again for coming along with us on this journey.
Train on!
Professor Merv

Text Before Edit: "11:00 AM Blitz Format, 3:00 PM Beginners Tournament, 6:30 PM One Piece Card Game Weekly Tourney"
This one's the Donphan in the room. The collecting potential of this set is going to be simply outrageous. The new card rarities of Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare take the place of the polarizing Hyper Rares of previous sets, while Full Art cards and Secret Rares remain. The generation nine starter Pokémon will be present within the set, as well as a cacophony of other highly collectable Pokémon. New and old icons will appear such as Miraidon, Koraidon, Great Tusk, Iron Treads, Arcanine, Gyarados, Gardevoir, Klawf, Kingambit, Dondozo, and... GASP! Wiglett!
Booster Set 02 "Paramount War" is set to be a massive hit for players, as is the complementing navy-themed Starter Deck aptly named "Absolute Justice!" We're soon to see a shift in terms of support for virtually all deck archetypes with this new set. Bandai has also already made it known that OP-03 "Pillars of Strength" and more recently OP-04 "Kingdoms of Intrigue" will be reaching us sooner rather than later, so expect more updates soon! Oh, and keep an eye out for new official One Piece sleeves too!
With the recent release of BT-11 "Dimensional Phase" we have finally received a new pool of cards to mess around with. Before the end of March we're set to see both the PB-12E 2nd Anniversary Set product and the Advanced Deck of the Demon King himself, Beelzemon! But Bandai is wasting no time in getting new releases to us, as BT-12 "Across Time" will be set to launch on April 28th! Keep one eye on the horizon however, because there's a timeline of products already planned. From main sets like BT-13 "Versus Royal Knights" to extra sets like EX-04 "Alternative Being" and even special products like PB-14 "Tamer Goods Set Angewomon & LadyDevimon" it looks like June and July are going to be busy!
In terms of news for our little store, Bandai seems to have been rather tight-lipped. Thus far we are confirmed to be receiving Starter Decks 01 through 04 and the very first Booster Set. We're also confirmed to be holding a Store Release Event! ... And that's all we have for you right now. A little underwhelming, I'm sure. But if this is your first exposure to the presence of Battle Spirits Saga at Brokenvase Games, then... Hooray! Get excited!
The Dawn of Ashes is coming, and in my humble opinion, it looks like absolute FIRE! This card game is brand new from prospective card game creators... "Weebs of the Shore" ...? Seriously... Well, if you haven't tried this game, please ask either Tom or Lawrence the next time you're in-store to give you a demo. It's definitely a lot of fun, and we've got Starter Decks and the first Booster Set on the way!
... And there you have it! That's what's on the immediate horizon for us here at Brokenvase! If you'd like to pre-order any of the products mentioned in this article, please don't hesitate to have a look here on the website!
]]>However! Christmas is a time for being thankful, and we have many, many things to be thankful for this year! We are BEYOND thankful for reaching an NDIS Ready status and for training our staff to support neurodiverse individuals. We’re extremely thankful for the overwhelming outpouring of positive feedback we’ve received from everyone who has had a wonderful experience with us! We’re thankful for a wonderful new team member who has joined us as part of our permanent staff, and we’re thankful for all of our pre-existing staff members too.
Through the ups and the downs, one thing remains true: Brokenvase Games wouldn't be here without you, the person reading this right now! We want to thank each and every person who has ever visited our humble little store, everyone who has spent time talking with us about our woes and worries, and everyone who has laughed and cheered alongside us. This time of year is a time of enjoying one's self and the company of those we hold dear. Let's enjoy our respite and take some time to slow down and appreciate the little things that we have, we’ve got a big year planned for 2023!
]]>"Holy dooley!" I hear you say. "Tom, ain't that one jam-packed syllabus!?"
Well, good sir and/or madam and/or other, your choice of words frighten and confuse me. I haven't the faintest clue at what a "jumbuck silly-bus" might be, but what I do have for you is a simplified breakdown! If the above image is too much to look at (and believe me, it is. I'm the one who made it) all you need to know is...
Now, I can already hear the mortified cries of those who admire the morphing blob:
"Tom! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?"
And to that I must reply "please let go of my arm, you are hurting me!" After much deliberation on the topic of the beloved & transformation-based format, Boss Lady Kat and myself have made the decision to allow Ditto Draft at all opening hours as long as you have a four-person pod to play it! In addition to this decision, because GYMSiRL has concluded for the year and gems are not currently able to attained, we would like to introduce the creation of Ditto Points! These points will be earned by playing and/or winning Ditto Draft games and can be used to purchase individual booster packs after your pink & blobby escapades are concluded. Rejoice, fans of the morphing monster!
It kind of sounds like it, doesn't it? But no, Blitz Format is a fantastic creation from our own equally as fantastic & talented Nate! Originally created as a way to balance quick learning & fast-paced gameplay, Blitz Format is an awesome & fresh mix-up to current Pokémon TCG rules. The best part is that you basically don't need to relearn anything at all. The only rules are: 30 card decks, maximum of three (3) copies of each card, three (3) prize cards, and no Pokémon with a rule box may be used (sorry to all V and Radiant lovers). Remember, the rule of three!
I have high hopes for Blitz and have recently become somewhat addicted to constructing decks for it myself. We'll also have preconstructed Blitz decks available for purchase starting next week as a way to help springboard you into this fast & furious format!
Alas, my friend, you are mistaken. While it's important to thank the bus driver, no jumbuck silly-bus will be making its way into our store unless we pivot into farming and party supplies. Build & Battle Royale is a sealed format in which all participants select and purchase any one (1) of our available Build & Battle kits (typically used for prerelease sealed format), construct a deck of 40 cards in the same usual fashion reserved for prereleases, and duke it out with off-the-cuff strategies and top-notch calculated prowess!!
WAIT, DON'T CLICK OFF! Hear me out for a second. It's the Pokémon that are undergoing spontaneous mutation! ... Hrmm... That sounded better in my head... Regardless, this one is Professor Frank's baby, so I'll tell you what he told me:
Mixed Mutant Metronome is an absolutely WILD sealed format in which players acquire 4 booster packs from random sets in order to construct a 40 card deck. As you can imagine, considering the name, there are some interesting rule changes! Firstly, you aren't restricted in how you evolve Pokémon normally. Monsters can evolve one stage higher into ANY Pokémon of the same type as them! A Basic Grass-type such as Caterpie could evolve into a Stage 1 Grass-type such as Cherrim, and then into any Stage 2 Grass-Type, like Venusaur. Quite the spontaneous tranformation, no?
In addition to the above rules, at the beginning of each round, two (2) random round rules will be applied to all players's games. These rules vary from beneficial effects such as drawing extra cards... To total hinderances such as always being Burned or Poisoned! Round rules don't stick around however, they'll change between rounds, so stay on your toes! (Heh, get it? "Around"...)
From the Raid Boss's perspective, it very well might be. Exactly what you may expect from the name, Raid Boss involves multiple trainers facing-off against a single, ultra-powerful opponent (piloted by yours truly). We're still ironing out the kinks in this one before we reveal more information about gameplay, pricing, and prize-support, so please stay tuned for more information!
... I also encourage you to inquire about it so that Gym Leader Tom doesn't forget about doing some actual testing of this event format.
Don't worry, this one's nice and simple. Come in to play some Digimon or One Piece and receive some extra goodies as a lil' Christmas gift from the team. Goodies have yet to be determined, but that's okay. You won't know what it is until you open it anyway.
... And there you have it! Hopefully that covers everything we've got going on. Thank you very much for sticking through this exceptionally long read. Our apologies if you got bored or if my strange humour wasn't quite as palatable as it is for my own self. If you've got any questions regarding events or... Any other form of query, really... Don't hesitate to reach out to the BVG crew via our Facebook or directly to me at tom@brokenvase.games!
And to all those we may not see until the festivities are concluded, from all of us at Brokenvase Games...

Brokenvase Games has been removed from Pokémon TCG’s online Team Challenge Season 3. This decision has been made by the Tournament Center Team at Pokémon from the UK. We were informed of this removal only after the decision has been made without any recourse for appeal, repeat attempts to engage with them has failed, and we were not officially told exactly why this decision was made initially. We are sorry for this unfortunate news. All Team Challenge Qualifier events has been removed from our events calendar.
It is with great sadness and disappointment that I have to write this announcement to the community. It was indeed devastating and truly disappointing blow to the spirit of our team that Pokémon TCG’s organisers acted and decided the way they did. From our perspective, their actions were no way in line with the spirit of what Pokémon stands for. Namely justice, compassion, and inclusion. I believe we owe it to the community to explain what happened as we believe that we have lived by our company values, and I see no fault in my team. Here is an account, from our perspective, the sequence of events:
I would like to re-iterate that BVG has complied with all local government law of social distancing and Pokémon TCG’s rules as far as we can see and understand. My team acted above reproach and lived up to our company values of kindness, trustworthiness, integrity, and human connection. I am proud of them and how they have jumped in to handle this situation professionally, proactively, and with vigilance.
It is truly disappointing and heartbreaking for Kat and myself to have created a business entirely themed around Pokémon, only to have the company or their appointed representatives handle this situation with such unprofessionalism and unresponsiveness to come to the table for a discussion. However, we are resilient, and we press on. We still have the GYMSiRL program to roll out and our New Set Gym Challenge Season 3 is underway as well. Our sponsored trainers are working hard towards the Brisbane Regions which is a physical organised Play! Pokémon event here in Brisbane – physically.
We are still open to any discussion from Pokémon or their representatives whenever they are ready to do so.
- Professor Merv
*p.s. I have instructed the team to award all registered players with booster packs from our own inventory regardless of what Pokemon has decided. It is not your fault this happened.

Started by a serial entrepreneur who loved the competitiveness of Trading Card Games, Brokenvase Games started out as an online Pokémon Card trading and retail business. Now it is the world's first IRL (In Real Life) Pokémon Cards Battle Gym and Pokémon Cafe.
The founders at Brokenvase Games believe in connecting people through playing a fun and competitive card game. They believe in encouraging parents to put down their phones and take away the iPads and Switches, sit down with their children and have fun together. It's about community and fun. It's about a better human experience and connection. Brokenvase Games is also a one-stop-shop for all things Pokémon Trading Card Game - collecting and playing.
]]>As promised, the crew at BVG have deliberated on what we would do this week with our operations and events we run. We have decided to continue with all scheduled and planned events and programs for now. If this changes, we will review and update the situation on a daily basis. As a recap and summary, here are a list of things that will continue:
* Please note that all our ticketed event prices has gone up by $2 from today. See details here.
]]>But for the safety of the staff, Professor Merv has stopped all order processing for now until it is safer on the roads and giving everyone a bit of a rest. This also means that any events we may have on this week is potentially postponed or cancelled. We will review the development of events on Wednesday morning.
Stay safe everyone!
p.s. Do take note that our opening hours have changed and the pricing for all our events has will be going up by $2 from the 1st of March.
]]>All divisions are welcome! For many of you, this might be your first time since we didn't have this for nearly 2 years because of Covid. For some of us, this is a very long awaited news! Did you know that our very own Gym Leader Jonny coached 2 Masters Division and 1 Senior Division player all the way to the World Championships in Washington DC back in 2019??
Any of you who have been to our tournaments at any level, and have finished in top 3 even once would be hight encouraged to compete in this event.
I know that quite a number of us will be going for the Brisbane Regionals, announced to be on the 12-13th of March. Just a few weeks away!! Time to get those decks tuned! Book in some coaching and tuning sessions here if you want one of our trainers to take a look at your deck and pratice with you.
We will be changing our opening hours to to the following:
From 1st of March all our standard tournament entry fee will increase by $2. At BVG, we are dedicated to keep the cost as affordable as possible. However, we also have many big plans to roll out this year that are new, potentially industry disrupting, and fun. Designing and developing these innovations do cost quite a bit. We hope you can journey with us on this and the increase will not deter you from your continued support. We welcome any feedback regarding this at any time. Please do contact us if you would like to know more or have any questions.
After running a relatively successful closed beta of GYMiRL (Pokemon Gyms - In-Real-Life), we are ready to announce and open this game to anyone interested. The program will be open for participation sometime in March. It is FREE to join and anyone participating will enjoy a $2 per week voucher to use towards our standard tournament entry fee. In the meantime, you can watch this video to catch a glimpse of what it's about.

You will be receiving instructions on this season's finale details! More to come soon.
]]>Below are the instructions we've created for you if you have not entered the Team Challenge before. Please ensure this is set up 1 hour before your first session. You can also come into the store for us to help you any time before the challenge starts.
We are calling anyone interested in playing a Dungeons & Dragon campaign to join our first beta test that will start on the 2nd of March.
For 4 fortnights on a Wednesday at 4pm, from the 2nd of March, 5 young adventurers will brave a new world and create their own story that will become tales we tell at BVG for a long time!
Requirements for first intake:
We will have a professional Dungeon Master throughout the campaign. You will learn the game, have fun, and be able to practice many skills within the group.

Remember: All Single Cards store-wide are automatically 20% off ticketed price too! The discount will be taken off at check out.
]]>We have way too much stock and stuff EVERYWHERE! Professor Merv likes to hoard things as certain Gym Leader would like to remind him...
He has decided we need to prepare for a MASSIVE Brilliant Stars set. Plus, we're launching into Flesh and Blood and supporting a steady Digimon Card Game community too... So we will need resources in many places.
Help us expand and get some good deals along the way!
Even though Brokenvase Games was started at a time when companies all around were struggling to deal with the various pressures brought about by Covid-19, they managed to not only stay afloat, but even thrive and expand operations.
Two factors attributed to the company’s success during this difficult period:
The first is its business model, which focuses on physical interaction. In a time, when everyone was heading online, founder Mervin Chiang, recognised a need for platforms where people could disconnect from the digital realm and connect back in a physical manner. This business idea was inspired by his own experience of trying to bond and communicate with his elder son, Keon, who he had been playing Pokémon Cards with since 2019.
So, whilst the idea to start a physical gaming café began before Covid-19, it suddenly became very relevant as people began to crave for physical interactions amidst the social distancing restrictions brought about by the pandemic.
But, it’s not just a novelty for the pandemic. Through observing kids at play, Mervin noticed that there were many positive developmental attributes that trading card games such as Pokémon Cards offered.
Shares Mervin: “Not only does it help children with functional learning in English, math and logical thinking, but it also encourages them to learn social and emotional development skills such as sportsmanship, emotional regulation and better communication.”
The second contributing success factor is a resilient attitude that was born out of crisis and adversity. Not only was the business started amidst a worldwide pandemic, it was at a time when Mervin, a former senior executive at a software implementation firm, was struggling with depression, and diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Rather than try to hide and suppress this side of himself, however, Mervin decided to embrace it and turn Brokenvase Games into a place where people suffering from emotional dysregulation, such as himself could feel comfortable. He wanted Brokenvase Games to be an inclusive place where not only the neurodiverse would feel at ease, but where neurotypical customers could also learn compassion, tolerance and patience. [Check out what Brokenvase Games is doing to reach out to the neurodiverse community]
For Mervin, and his wife, Kat, who co-owns the business, Community and Connection come before profits. The company’s slogan of “Connecting People” reflects that attitude. Hence, in a world, where it’s become the norm to assume that nothing is free, Brokenvase Games has gone against the grain to offer free decks for people to come and learn to play the game. They also do not charge for playing in-store.
In commemoration of their first anniversary, Brokenvase Games will be holding what they are calling “the biggest Pokémon party in the southern hemisphere”. From 9 am to 6 pm on 20 November 2021, they will be organising fun activities such as game stalls, sausage sizzles, tournaments and lucky draw prizes out of their newly-expanded outlet at Sumner.
Full details of the 1st anniversary party can be found at https://pokemonparty.co, as well as at Brokenvase’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/brokenvasegames/.
Mervin Chiang, Pokémon Professor, and Founder of Brokenvase Games says, “I’m really thrilled that we are able to celebrate one year of operations. Much more than the business success, I’m really glad that we are able to use this venture in a meaningful way to connect people. I think we all need a little kindness, especially right now during this pandemic.”
Kat Lek, Co-Founder of Brokenvase Games says, "I am trully humbled by the amazing community we've built. We have so many supportive and great customers. Some have become our friends now within this 1 year."
Chris Davies, customer and parent says, "As a dad with a child into Pokemon cards, being able to speak to trainers and players, learn what cards work for my son, and be able to buy the individual cards. It makes this a much more enjoyable and affordable experience. Friendly, approachable staff. Great atmosphere."
Khai Chong, customer and parent says, "We are truly blessed to have this friendly place where the kids can hang out to enjoy a screen-free activity that they love. The staff is always ready to help get newcomers into the game for free and prices for the events and cards are reasonable."

Professor Merv has Anxiety and Depression himself. Having been diagnosed with depression since 2016 and with ADHD in 2020, he knows all too well the benefits of opening up and talking about his mental health struggles. Brokenvase Games was born amidst 2 burn outs and a suicide attempt. He admits that he still struggles with his mental health every day, but having a strong and supportive family, community, friends, understanding staff, and a conducive to work in has helped a lot. Do not be afraid to ask the question. Do not be afraid to talk about your struggles. It is the first step of many steps towards recovery.
We encourage anyone to drop in and have a chat with us, or to give yourself a break from life. Don't be afraid to ask your friends and family if they're really OK, and create a genuine, meaningful conversation with them. For tips on how and when to ask, visit the R U OK? Day website.

Only cards from the Sword and Shield base set and higher will be playable in the Standard Tournament format. Popular cards from the playable sets include Zacian V, Evolution Incense and Crobat V.
Look out for the Regulation Marks which make it easier for players to see which cards are playable in the current rotations. They can be found on the bottom left of a Pokemon card! Any cards with the Regulation Mark 'D' or higher are legal in Standard Tournaments. Legality/playability for cards will be tied to the Regulation Marks instead of expansion release from now on, making it easier for players to determine which cards they can still play.
Due to Fairy type Pokemon not receiving further support after the release of the Sword and Shield series, basic Fairy energy will also stop being playable post-rotation.
If you are confused about which cards can still be played post-rotation, ask one of our friendly gym trainers for some guidance!
